Stalbridge Church of England Primary School

January 2010

Dear Parents/Carers

It's not been the best start to the new term! Sorry that we had to close the school on Wednesday and Thursday last week due to the weather and the treacherous driving conditions. We were able to open the school on Friday thanks to the efforts of our teachers who braved the roads.

I hope that our communication systems worked well and you all got the information you needed. The school's website was updated by 8am each day with new information. If you are unsure of whether we are open or not check the website at

In addition to important information the website is added to frequently with school news. The news update section has recent events and the class areas hold information on what's happening in your child's class. You can find all newsletters there and PTA things too.

Here's some new dates and information for you.

School uniform and PE kit
The days are cold and the field can be muddy, please ensure your child has appropriate PE kit for the conditions and activity. Children should not wear their school jumpers or cardigans for PE. We encourage children to have tracksuits for outside sport. A sweatshirt or even an old jumper are fine to keep children warm. Often we have cases of children taking the wrong coat or clothing home as someone else has one like it. Please check that your child has the right clothing - the best way to ensure this is to name items clearly.

School start time and lateness
We start Wake 'n' Shake at 8.55am, registration time is 9am. If your child arrives at school after our official start time of 9am please could they come to the front desk so that they get marked in the register. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that their children attend school punctually. It is the schools duty to report persistent lateness to the Educational Welfare Service.

We had a speight of illnesses that spread throughout the school last term. It is often unavoidable not to pass on viruses and bugs but we must try to do as much as we can to prevent illness spreading.

If your child is ill with cold or flu symptoms please keep them at home until they are over the worst. If your child has had a stomach upset we recommend they have 48 hours to recover from it before they return to school.

Facebooks, Bebo etc - Social Networking Sites
Last term we ran internet social networking safety sessions for Year 5 and 6 children and parents of Year 4, 5 and 6 children. Those that attended felt the sessions were really informative and worthwhile. We have posted the video we showed on our website so you can watch them at home. I urge you all to watch them. We will show the videos in school again on Wednesday 13th January at 2.50pm and then again at 3.25pm. This is open to all parents.

As a point of information we'd like to make parents aware that Facebook state on their website that children under 13 years old are not permitted access to Facebook.

Sorry we're late giving the club list out you. We had planned to send it last Wednesday but we weren't in! As is takes a lot of time to allocate children to clubs, clubs will start in Week 3 - from Monday 18th January. We will ensure that children whose club is split into two groups get equal number of weeks.

Church Visits
Our first visit to the church this term will be Thursday 14th January. The service starts at 9.10am and all parents and relatives are welcome to join us. However if the pavements are still icy Rev William Ridding will be carrying out the service in the school hall, you are still welcome to join us.

Pupil Targets
Your children will all have been set new learning targets for the new term. These help children and yourselves know where they are in their learning journey and what they must do to move further on. A copy of these will be forwarded to you and progress against these targets can be discussed by you and the class teacher at our parent consultation evenings (see dates below).
