Can you help us to provide some playtime resources? The children enjoy the telephones (large handsets not old mobiles) and computer keyboards. They also like any role play resources, for example, cookers, chalk boards, pop up tents, children's wheelbarrows/ gardening resources. If you can help, please let the office know. The school council will be working on purchasing new sports toys for playtimes too.
Well done to Year 4 swimmers who did really well in the swimming gala on Tuesday, at Clayesmore School.
All children will have swimming lessons after half term. Please can you ensure you have paid the office your swimming pool donation as soon as possible. This is £10.50 for one child, £18.50 for two children and £25.50 for three children.
Swimming kit includes:
- Swimming trunks (tight fitting, rather than loose shorts)
- Bathing costume (no bikinis please)
- Swimming Hat

Wear Purple 9th June for JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis)
This year, on Friday 9th June, we will be supporting the JIA charity by Wearing Purple all day. This charity helps to support the young people and families affected by Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. We would like the children to bring in at least £1 for the opportunity to wear purple on this day please.
Inter-house Kwik Cricket
Year 3 and 4 children have competed this week in an inter-house Kwik Cricket tournament. Year 5 and 6 will do theirs after half term. The scores will contribute towards the final sports day result. Well done to the Green team, who won the Year 3 & 4 competition with 60 runs!
Homework for Summer Term
We have already begun our reduction in homework for the summer term. The only homework which school will expect from all classes is
- Times tables practice
Please ensure you listen to your child read on a regular basis and sign the reading record as this contributes towards class competitions.
Year 1 Assembly
Well done to the children and staff in Year 1 for a fantastic dinosaur assembly. Thank you for joining us to celebrate their achievements so far this year.
Well done to the organisers of the 80's Disco. It was a fantastic night with some excellent outfits! Also, a big well done to the PTA for the cake sale this week. All donations help to provide valuable learning resources for the children.

Sports Day 29th June
This year we have made some changes to our sports day organisation; sports day will be separated into Key Stages:-
- Key Stage 1 (Years R, 1 and 2) will be in the morning
- Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6) will be in the afternoon
We hope that this will provide more opportunities for participation in events like running. Our Key Stage 2 sports will be much more 'athletics' based. Timings will be available soon.
The Year 6 children had a fantastic time at Brenscombe this week. They had perfect weather and behaved fantastically. Well done to all. Thank you to Miss Swaine, Mrs Chant. Mrs Lane, Mr Hunt and Canon Ridding for their support and care over the week.
Multi Academy Trust Update (from the Blackmore Vale Learning Trust)
It is 6 months since we briefed both staff and parents on our ambition to form the BVLT from Sturminster Newton High School and 4 of its pyramid primary schools (William Barnes, Stalbridge, Hazelbury Bryan, and St Nicholas Child Okeford). Since then there have been some developments which we (the Steering Group) would like to update you on.
First, and most importantly, Shillingstone Primary School has joined this venture as a full partner, which we are delighted about as it makes the proposal even stronger. Since the briefing we have been developing all of the governance arrangements to explain how the Trust will operate, including its relationship with the governing bodies of each of the schools. We have also been looking to see where we can achieve economies of scale (mainly in support services) to save money, money that can be reinvested in the education, to benefit the pupils. Although this has resulted in more work for the headteachers, the benefits of this close cooperation have been significant and reinforce our belief that forming the BVLT is the right thing to do. You will have heard much in the news recently about the difficult financial situation facing many schools. We are convinced that we are better placed to deal with these working as a single unit, as opposed to 6 individual schools. We have also been in discussion with the Department of Education on what it sees as its Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) strategy for Dorset (how many and how big) as there is currently a lack of clarity. We are keen to see who we might partner with at some time in the future, once the BVLT has been successfully operating for a few years.
We submitted our formal application to become a MAT in March, with the expectation that it would be approved at the end of April. The decision to hold a snap General Election has upset this process, as the approvals board that was supposed to be considering our application was cancelled. We expect our application to be resubmitted in early July, which means that, if approved, the BVLT would start in January '18.
We hope to provide a further series of briefings to you all in the Autumn, once we have gained approval in July.
Congratulations to Mrs Brown, who will be expecting a baby later in the year.
That's all our news for this week, have a fantastic and safe half term and we will look forward to seeing you all on Monday 5th June.
